Kefalonia Cruise would like to wish you
all a Happy New Year.
Let's celebrate with a competition!
January is a quiet time for most of us as we recover physically and
financially from the festive celebrations, reflect on the year left behind, thinking about the year ahead and how to make our dreams come true!
January may be the coldest month of the year in Kefalonia with lots of
rain and even snow on top of Mount Ainos, but it still has many days of bright
sunshine and blue skies.
Accommodation is also much cheaper in January then
during the summer, so if the summer heat is too much to bear, then this time of
year is perfect to go for long walks on the beach and explore the
island. There are no direct flights to Kefalonia from November to March, however
flights to Kefalonia via Athens are regular.
Once the summer season ends, many hotels, restaurants and tourist
attractions close. But despite the notion by many that there's nothing to do in
Kefalonia in the winter months, for the locals this couldn't be further from
the truth.
There are in fact 5 significant events
in Kefalonia in January alone.
Januray 6th is the celebrations of Epiphany, probably the most
worldwide known celebration out of the 5 locally celebrated events.
In Kefalonia this is celebrated with a Bank Holiday allowing locals to
take part in or watch the celebrations, which take place in Argostoli and
Lixouri.
Kefalonians and all over Greece celebrate the baptism of Jesus (the
revelation of Jesus being the son of God; and the Holy Spirit as the third entity
of the Holy Trinity) by following the religious tradition of blessing the
Waters. Hundreds of Greek Orthodox Christians brace the cold and jump into the sea to retrieve
the Cross for good luck. It's all very exciting!
Although the tourist season begins softly in May, Kefalonians' will soon
begin getting ready. Hotels and restaurants will begin painting and renovating,
overgrown trees and bushes will be cut back and made to look pretty, shops will
restock and the Lady O will have her annual face-lift, service and visit from
the Greek authorities ensuring she is ready for action! If you are in Kefalonia
in the quieter months to witness the busy bees at work, you will truly be
amazed at their hard work and dedication.
